Album Release: Alabaster dePlume’s Peach

2 October 2015 Alabaster dePlume

Peach cover design

The much-anticipated new album by Alabaster dePlume is now on general release, available from all the usual digital retailers and Alabaster’s online store.

A limited edition vinyl version is available as a pre-order from QRATES.

Here are a few words about the record…

A peach is a sweet and soft and good thing with a stone in the middle, and this is an album about being a person. Smartphones, analogue tape, valve microphones, computers, group games and a grand banquet were used to create this collection of songs, tunes and monologues, that use a series of contradictions to talk about being alive.

Long-term collaborators John Ellis (piano) and Paddy Steer (percussion, bass, lapsteel, synth) join Angus Fairbairn (vocal, tenor sax) along with eleven other musicians and nearly a hundred other voices in presenting sounds likened to Ethiopian jazz and Japanese folk music. Scripts and vocal delivery evoke Ivor Cutler, Emo Philips and Leonard Cohen, for this combination of theatre, live-captured music, songs, humour and philosophy.

It is a unique collection, made by unusual means designed around the artistry and conveyance of its many contributors. Created over three years in London and Manchester, it’ll be celebrated in those two towns on the dates below, following its vinyl and digital release on Manchester label Debt Records, on 28th September 2015.

A composer, musician and performer, Alabaster DePlume (Angus Fairbairn) has toured northern Europe, appeared on UK national radio and developed theatre for Bram Stoker Festival in Dublin. His many combined arts projects are based around music, and personal inclusion. In this, his third album, he has employed as many voices as he can, in conveying a method of survival he’s been taught, he says, by everyone he’s met.

Hope grows naturally, like a
dandelion between the bricks.
I feel good…

Album launch party: 4th October at The Wonder Inn, Manchester, UK.

Out Now: “You Did This To Me” by Louis Barabbas

18 September 2015 Louis Barabbas

18 Sept 2015

The first single from Louis Barabbas‘ upcoming solo album is now on general release, available from all the usual digital retailers and streaming services. We recommend buying direct from the artist’s own online store, however, where the song is available in FLAC, MP3 and other formats as a name-your-price download.

PRESS RELEASE

Louis Barabbas releases debut solo single “You Did This To Me”.

The Bedlam Six frontman reveals a different side to his personality in this quietly funky think-piece about blame and affection – an oddly passive-aggressive love song that may raise the eyebrows of existing fans.

“The songs that emerge as Bedlam Six numbers are often wheedled out from a tangle of other compositions that don’t really fit the band’s performance style” explains Louis, “for every erratic snarling foot-stomper there tends to also be a slightly malformed wordy afterbirth. When the band went on hiatus last year I figured it was time to see if a few of these could be turned into anything. The resulting collection became a solo album called Gentle Songs Of Ceaseless Horror. This is the first glimpse into that project.”

You did this to me
As the leaves began to fall
Exposed your heart and all its teeth
As the shadows dripped from every wall

Teaming up with producer Biff Roxby (Honeyfeet, Bedlam Six) alongside rhythm section Phill Howley (Liz Green, Shyfinger) and Joel Roberts (The Chaps, Lou & The Llamas), Louis’ new single is a very different proposition from his usual flamboyant Dirt-Swing exploits with The Bedlam Six. By turns reminiscent of Leonard Cohen, J. J. Cale and even Hans Zimmer, “You Did This To Me” will have Louis’ audience wondering what else to expect from the new album.

The music video directed by Paul Wright doubles as the first chapter in an unsettling film narrative that will accompany the album.
